Drink Recipe Development
Drink Recipe Development
Independent recipe development for UK drinks brands: turning an idea, a kitchen batch, or a rough concept into a commercial drink recipe that's ready for production.
Overview
Commercial drink recipe development, from concept to scale-up
Recipe development that's built with commercial production in mind from the first trial.
Drink recipe development is the work of building a recipe from an idea, a brief, or an early kitchen batch, and shaping it into something a commercial kitchen or co-packer can actually run. That means more than getting the flavour right: it means choosing ingredients that are realistically sourceable, keeping an eye on unit cost as the recipe takes shape, and thinking ahead to how the recipe will hold up once it moves from a jug on a bench to a tank on a production line.
Taste Right works on recipe development as its own piece of work, and as part of a fuller beverage formulation project where recipe, process and production are planned together from the outset.
What's included
What our drink recipe development service covers
Four parts of the same recipe, worked through together.
Benchtop recipe development
Building and trialling the recipe itself: base liquid, flavour system and any functional ingredients, tested and adjusted round by round until it's right.
Flavour profiles and ingredient sourcing
Shaping the flavour profile around ingredients that are realistically available at the volumes and prices a commercial product needs.
Cost-effective recipe formulation
Keeping unit economics in view throughout development, so the finished recipe is one the brand can actually afford to make and sell.
Scaling recipes for commercial production
Preparing a bench-proven recipe for its move to commercial volume, with the process detail a production partner needs to run it accurately.
Across categories
Recipe development for different beverage categories
Different categories bring different formulation challenges.
Carbonated & functional
Soft drinks, sodas & functional beverages
Balancing sweetness, acidity and carbonation, alongside any functional ingredients, so the drink is refreshing and behaves consistently batch to batch.
RTD
Ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails & spirits
Developing recipes that hold their balance and clarity once bottled or canned, not just when freshly mixed over ice.
Natural & botanical
Juices, teas & botanicals
Working with natural ingredients that vary batch to batch, to build a recipe that stays consistent despite that variation.
Dairy-alternative
Dairy-alternative & health drinks
Formulating around plant-based bases and functional additions, where texture and mouthfeel need as much attention as flavour.
Kitchen to factory
From kitchen recipe to commercial formulation
A recipe that works at home doesn't automatically survive a production line.
Plenty of drink recipes start life in a kitchen, a market stall, or a friend's back garden. Getting from there to a commercial formulation means working out what changes at volume: how ingredients behave in a large batch, how the recipe holds up through pasteurisation or cold filling, and how it needs to be packaged and stored to stay stable on a shelf.
None of that has to mean losing what made the original recipe good. The aim is a commercial version that still tastes like the one that started the idea in the first place.
Why independent
Why work with an independent recipe developer?
With no factory or ingredient supplier to favour, recipe decisions are made around what the drink needs, not what happens to be easiest to source or run.
The same person carries the recipe's full history from first trial to final version, rather than it being handed between different contacts along the way.
Recipes are developed with production in mind from the outset, so there's no separate step of reworking everything once a co-packer gets involved.
Step by step
How the recipe development process works
Discovery call
A free conversation about the drink, the idea behind it, and what's already been tried.
Concept & benchtop trials
Building and testing the recipe on the bench, round by round, against flavour, function and cost.
Refinement & costing
Tightening the recipe once it's close, and checking it against realistic ingredient and packaging costs.
Handover for production
Preparing the finished recipe and its documentation for a production partner, with support carried through if one is needed.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between recipe development and formulation?
The two terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. Recipe development usually refers to the flavour and ingredient work itself; beverage formulation is the wider process that also covers how that recipe is processed, scaled and stabilised for commercial production.
Who owns the intellectual property (IP) of the drink recipe?
Recipe IP is agreed at the outset of a project, and normally sits with the brand commissioning the work. The specifics are set out in the project agreement before development begins.
Can you convert a home recipe into a commercial version?
Yes, this is a common starting point. The work is refining and adjusting an existing recipe so it holds up at commercial volume, rather than starting from nothing.
How long does drink recipe development take?
It depends on the category, how far along the recipe already is, and how many trial rounds it needs. This gets scoped properly on the discovery call, rather than quoted as a fixed timeline here.
Do you help find co-packers for production?
Yes. Once a recipe is ready, Taste Right can match it with a suitable UK co-packer based on packaging format, volume and processing requirements.
